I hope you’re well.
I’m about to go on summer break after an intense eight months of non-stop work. I wanted to quickly announce something before I go, because the deadline fast approaches.
I currently teach on the Faber Academy Writing A Novel course. And there is a six month course starting on 7th October 2021, Thursday daytimes 10.30am-1.30pm. Now, I understand that these courses are pricey and I want to give back to the writing community.
Look, let’s just get to the point of this: I’ve created a scholarship at Faber Academy. I have paid the price of a place on my daytime Writing A Novel course and added a £250 stipend to help towards travel and other materials for a writer of colour from a low income background. You can apply for the scholarship here. The details of the course are here with all the dates and what we do each week. All I ask is that you show up, do the work, write your novel and be the writer you were born to be.
The reason for doing this is to try and do a little bit to help people access these courses, which are helpful to your writing career. These courses offer peer support, technical help, workshopping of your work, a community and advice and mentorship from me. I know the cost is a barrier, which is why I’m funding this scholarship.
My mum always said that in times of good fortune, it’s important to do something for your community as well. I was lucky, in the last year, to sign two book contracts, one for a creative writing book out next year, and one for something that’ll be announced soonish. So, I wanted to do something for my community.
The deadline is 31st August 2021. Get applying. It’s not too onerous a form to fill in, and there’s no monitoring form. I trust you. If you feel like the criteria applies to you, please apply.
I know this is a drop in the ocean, one place on one course, especially given the week publishing has had. But it’s something.
I hope it helps.
